NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Northborough third-grade student rescued a classmate last week with the Heimlich maneuver.

Shailyn Ryan, 9, took a home alone safety class on April 30. The class was offered through the University of Massachusetts at the Northborough Recreation Department. This is where she learned how to perform the Heimlich maneuver.

The next day, Ryan was eating lunch with a friend at the Marguerite Elementary Peaslee School.

“She was sitting at a table behind me and her back was towards me. And she was eating a hot dog and she took a big bite of it. And she turned around and her face was all red, and her mouth was open. And she tapped me on the shoulder and she couldn’t speak, so I turned around and gave her the Heimlich maneuver,” Ryan said.

Ryan is now being called a hero.
