NORWELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A boil water advisory is in effect in Norwell, Mass. after E. coli was found in the town's water supply.

The town is advising residents to boil water that will be used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, food preparation and washing dishes until further notice. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for a minute and cooled before it's used. Residents are also advised to throw out any ice, drinks, uncooked food or formula that was made with tap water on or after July 7.

“This is a precautionary but urgent measure being taken to protect the health and safety of our residents,” said Town Administrator Chad Lovett in a statement. The cause of the contamination is under investigation.

E. coli can sicken people, especially those with weakened immune systems, babies and the elderly. Symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches and jaundice.

The town will be distributing cases of bottled water at Norwell High School Friday and residents are advised to check the town's website for updates.
