NORWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Construction crews began repairing the Morse Street Bridge in Norwood Tuesday, days after it was damaged when a cement truck crashed into it.

On Thursday, Sept. 28, the cement mixer truck slammed into the railroad bridge and pushed it about five feet. Police said the driver was okay.

The crash led to Norwood police closing Morse Street between Pleasant Street and Short Street.

For Tuesday's repair work, Shaughnessy Crane Service will cut out the bridge's steel overpass section, lift it, and lay it on the tracks nearby for repairs.

Officials said the new bridge span will be about 18 inches higher.

According to Norwood Police Chief William Brooks, Morse Street will be open to through traffic as soon as Wednesday, as long as the walls are determined to be stable.
