BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A local figure skating pair heads to Montreal to compete in the World Figure Skating Championships.
Spencer Howe and Emily Chan train out of the Skating Club of Boston in Norwood and will compete in the 2024 World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal. The event started on March 18 and goes until March 24.
This is the duo's first time competing since Howe had shoulder surgery in May 2023. Coach Olga Ganicheva said Howe’s shoulder is not completely back to normal, but she still expects the talented pair to pull through.
“It’s just okay, but he will be a fighter,” said Ganicheva.
Director Mia Bailey said that Howe and Chan’s chemistry is what sets them apart from other skaters.
“They’re able to tell a story unlike, I’d say, any other teams in our country and arguably the world. We know that they are so capable and really have an opportunity to be on that podium,” said Bailey.
In addition to this year’s World Figure Skating Championships, they have their sights set on winning the 2026 Olympics in Italy and the 2025 World Championships on their home turf.
“We also are hosting the World Championships here in Boston next year at TD Garden, so I think [we want] nothing short of a gold medal at both of those events,” said Bailey.
