STOUGHTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) —An ultra-marathon runner from Norwood ran the Mid State Massive last month in just over 27 hours. His secret… Town Spa Pizza.
Andy MacLeod, a hiker-turned-ultramarathoner, was participating in the Mid State Massive — a trail race where competitors ran either 50 kilometers, 50 miles or 100 miles. The Norwood man opted for the longest of the options.
“When I would come up to aid stations, my wife would be there with Town Spa,” Andy said.
Although Andy’s strategy was not to eat pizza ahead of the race, he found the shocking discovery on the way to the race.
“We just had the pizza in the car from the night before and I'm like, 'let me get a slice of pizza,' and then sure enough, this is real good, it’s keep me properly fueled and such, so I'm like I'm going to go with this for the rest of the race,” Andy said.
The infamous bar pizza slices fit perfectly in the pocket of his running vest.
“It got squished a little bit, but it was almost like it was made for bar pizza,” Andy said.
By the time he stopped, MacLeod had vertically traversed the entire state of Massachusetts (plus some of New Hampshire). He ran 100 miles at a time of 27 hours six minutes nine seconds. That time was good enough for a 22nd-place finish out of 75 runners.
