NWS: Small Tornado Touched Down In North Brookfield

NORTH BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The National Weather Service says a small tornado touched down west of Worcester on Sunday, during a string of fierce storms across the state.

The NWS team investigating the EF-0 tornado said the touched down a little east of the North Brookfield Waste Water center in North Brookfield at about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday. It ran for about two miles to the intersection of Ryan Road and Hillsville Road.

No one was injured, but some trees were damaged. The worst of the damage was around Ward Street. Some witnesses told the team they saw debris being lifted in the air and flung around, but no one actually saw a funnel. Winds inside the tornado reached a peak of 80 miles per hour, about five miles per hour from being an EF-1.

The town's emergency management agency did note "significant damage in the Ryan Rd/Hillsville Rd area," including downed trees.
