BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's been ten years since the Boston Marathon bombing, and now there are just a few days to go until this year’s event.
Final marathon preparations are underway, while on stage at Copley Square on Thursday, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and other officials including Boston and State Police and the FBI gave an update on public safety precautions being taken for the running of the 127th Boston Marathon.
Joseph Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division, said while there is an elevated threat of violence and extremism coming from online hate groups, the FBI so far is not aware of any credible threats.
He also said an effective way to defend against any threats comes directly from people every day being observant and vigilant.
“If you do see something online, in person, in your community, or in the crowds on race day, say something,” he said.
This year’s race on April 17th features a field of 30,000 athletes, made up of runners from all 50 states and from 121 countries.
