METHUEN, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police say that a dog who appeared to have been shot last week was actually killed by one or more dogs.

“The investigation determined that the dog was not shot, as previously suspected,” police said in a release.Authorities say that a necropsy examination performed by veterinarian Martha Smith-Blackmore of Forensic Veterinary Investigations LLC found that the dog was killed in a mauling attack by one or more other dogs.

Moose, the German Shepard, was found his owners at a home in Methuen on April 4.

In a report Smith-Blackmore noted that it is not unusual for fatal dog-on-dog mauling to be mistaken for a gunshot injury.

The family that owned Moose also owns three other dogs.

“Police will offer resources and advice to the family on next steps. The criminal investigation is considered closed,” authorities said.
