LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Sumner Tunnel is closing once again this summer from July 5-Aug. 5. But transportation officials say there are alternative routes available.

WBZ NewsRadio went to check out the Ava Pearl, a ferry out of Lynn that is offering rides for commuters while the tunnel is under construction.

“It’s awesome, I can’t imagine doing this commute, being able to have snacks, to watch this beautiful view [of the water], this has to be one of the best commutes along the system,” Secretary of Transportation Monica Tibbits-Nutt said at a news conference Friday morning.

Tibbits-Nutt was joined by members of MassDOT and the MBTA to update residents on the next phase of improvements including work on the tunnel’s roadway.

“So, we will be having free and reduced parking at many of the different lots, the Blue Line will also be free, [and] [the Ava Pearl] will be operating on a Zone 1A fare rate,” Tibbits-Nutt added.

The Sumner Tunnel closure was first scheduled to be a two-month closure but has now been reduced to one month.

“We really hope that people will listen to us, and really look at those other services that are being provided for ferry, for commuter rail, and that people take advantage of them,” State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said.

Commuters are encouraged to check out Mass 511 for additional travel options.
