BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Braintree Schools Superintendent's Office says a Braintree teacher was assaulted by a student on Thursday as part of a viral TikTok trend.
The district did not identify the teacher or student involved. Rumor of a "Slap A Teacher Challenge" has attracted significant national coverage after a destructive trend called "Devious Licks" swept the social network in the past few weeks.
In a letter penned to the Braintree community, the district said that any student who physically assaults a staff member could be expelled, and all incidents would be referred to Braintree Police.
Legal charges stemming from attacking a teacher could range from assault to indecent assault and battery, officials said.
The school district blasted the platform for "Abhorrent behaviors and debased language," saying that the behavior seen on TikTok is a "minefield for students."
Officials consider the TikTok threat so great, it even merited a letter from Connecticut Attorney General William Tong on Monday.
TikTik itself has banned search terms related to "Slap the Teacher" and "Devious Licks," but insists that the trend encouraging assaulting teachers has never existed on its platform.
