BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A building considered the ugliest in Boston is set to become a historic landmark.
The city’s Landmarks Commission voted to name Boston City Hall as a historic landmark last week in an effort to preserve and protect the structure.
The building was completed in 1968 as part of the city urban renewal project in the 60s. The architects were inspired by the brutalist aesthetic, which emphasizes monochromatic colors, heavy geometrical shapes, and concrete materials.
While the modernism vision for the city was there, many local residents have voiced their displeasure for the visuals. In a 2023 Boston.com poll, more than 60% overwhelmingly said it is the ugliest building in the city.
Despite all that, Boston City Hall has solidified its historical significance with this new milestone.
Mayor Michelle Wu still needs to approve the vote, but she has said she is a big fan of the building.
