ROWLEY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A movie in contention for six Oscars was filmed mostly in Massachusetts.
The movie, "Sound of Metal," was directed by Conway, Mass. native Darius Marder. It's about a heavy-metal drummer whose life is upended when he begins to go deaf.
The 2019 film was a decade in the making. One of the movie's scene was filled in the Agawam Diner in Rowley. Owner Ethel DePasquale said parts of the historic diner, like the pay phone, needed to be rearranged.
"It starts ringing while they're filming, so then they were trying to take it off the hook, but you can't actually take a payphone off the hook," she said.
DePasquale and her sister actually cooked the food for the scene themselves. She said the filming attracted a lot of attention from residents in the small town at the time.
"People were driving by and they were hollering, and tooting," she said, with a laugh.
