MARSHFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some residents in Marshfield are upset over the removal of a Virgin Mary statue from Veteran's Memorial Park shortly after its installation.
The caretaker who put the statue up was the same to take it down. Then, that caretaker complained on social media that Town Administrator Michael Maresco would not allow the Virgin Mary on town property.
"With the age of computers it is very easy for people to sit down and say whatever they want to say," Maresco said.
That's when the online backlash started.
"I think it was like maybe 200-300 [comments], I didn't take time to count them all but it was a substantial amount," Maresco said.
Maresco believes the caretaker did not relay the entire story online, citing the separation of Church and State as the reasoning behind removing the religious figure.
"Anyone in government knows there is a separation between Church and State," he said.
One online user met up with Maresco in person to inquire about the statue's removal.
"He went back out on Facebook to say he had a great conversation about why you can't have religious statutes there," Maresco said.
