BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Over fifty Massachusetts beaches were closed Friday morning because of varying bacteria in the water.
All but one of the beaches are closed due to either a harmful cyanobacteria bloom or a bacterial exceedance reading. Swimming in these waters can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, respiratory illness and itching according to the Department of Public Health (DPH).
This comes just days after DPH announced a swimmer was infected with Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria, in the waters off Old Silver Beach in Falmouth. The Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment said the person was swimming with an exposed wound. They also noted that these types of infections are uncommon in Massachusetts.
