BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A growing trend on social media features people getting tattoos while under general anesthesia.
For thousands of years, people have been willing to endure a certain amount of pain and discomfort during the tattoo process.
But those days could be diminishing if this trend catches on.
There's a debate going on between people who would consider going under to get a tattoo, and those who would not. "Part of the experience for me is actually like, the sensation," one woman said. "I think it's an experience worth being present for."
John presented another angle to the debate. "How intolerant to pain are you for goodness's sake... they just don't hurt that much," he said.
He added his concern about the risks associated with undergoing general anesthesia. "Anesthesia can mess up a lot of people. They don't realize it, but it's not quite as benign as people think."
But one guy without a tattoo said he would consider getting one if he was put under. "Yes, if that was an option."
While another guy agreed. "I mean it's something I would definitely consider."
General anesthesia in most cases is done safely by certified medical professionals in proper settings, although there was a case in January of a 45-year-old influencer in Brazil who died under general anesthesia while getting a tattoo.
But despite the risks, the trend of going under to get a tattoo is growing on social media.
Another consideration is cost.
Anesthesia is expensive.
One tattoo artist said a back tattoo without general anesthesia costs $10-$15 thousand.
With general anesthesia, $30-$35 thousand.
