Painting Exhibit In East Boston Uses Acrylic Art As Therapy

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — An art exhibit in East Boston this month focuses on painting as a form of therapy.

"Overcoming Challenge with Color" at the Atlantic Works Gallery on Border Street features work by artists Sandrine Colson and Kristen Freitas. The exhibit runs through Saturday, April 29.

"Both Sandrine and I use a medium called acrylic paint pouring, and the outcome of the paintings really is a surprise to us," Freitas told WBZ NewsRadio. "So we basically take the colors and it’s just lots of color, lots of movement, lots of abstract, and you can interpret them the way you want."

Colson and Freitas use their artwork as an outlet to deal with the challenges in their lives and, according to the exhibit description, "liberate their souls and attempt to create their own world of happiness."

"When I’m painting, it’s very therapeutic," Freitas said. "The colors bring me joy, the way they mix brings me joy. If I’m having a rough day, I’ll always either color with my toddler or paint in the studio, and it just uplifts me. I think everyone needs that now."

The gallery hours are 2-6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
