Parking Meters Could Be Added To Roslindale Square

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Roslindale Square could see some major changes to its parking regulations.

The Boston Transportation Department has proposed installing one hour parking meters to Belgrade Avenue, Corinth Street, South Street, and parts of Washington Street, as well as four hour parking meters outside the square.

The proposal is based on a study and survey the department conducted in 2021, which found that drivers were parking in public spots without meters and leaving their vehicles there for far longer than the two hour time limit.

"Some people they park over by where there’s no meters and they can get the train, that’s what they do," one Roslindale resident said.

According to the department, adding parking meters "encourages parking turnover and discourages long-term parking. Enforcement of a parking meter is more efficient than non-metered time restriction parking and results in better compliance. This increases turnover, increases available parking spaces, and allows more drivers to use those spaces to access their destination."

"I don’t really see an issue with parking, I really don’t," one woman said.

"I think they just want to make money," another resident said.

Another change to Roslindale Square would be increasing free parking at the Taft Hill Municipal Lot from two to four hours.

"The intent is to attract drivers that will be parking for longer durations to the municipal parking lot rather than have them occupy on-street parking spaces," the study said. "This will reduce the number of vehicles circling the block looking for on-street parking, resulting in a reduced volume of vehicles, reduced congestion, and safer streets for all road users."

The department is accepting public feeding until Friday and will then issue a revised proposal based on that feedback.
