LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It will soon be harvesting time at a behavioral health facility in Lynn, Mass., where patients take care of the garden.

BayRidge Hospital has been around for 25 years, but this is the second year they have had a garden cared for by patients. Amy Galvin, Director of Food and Nutrition for Beth Israel Lahey Health, helps the patients as they fill the garden with herbs and vegetables.

“For them to be able to see it and have something tangible, they are fostering something that’s coming to fruition and they’re going to be able to share it with the other patients as well as us,” said Galvin. “I think that’s really important.”

Gavin said the garden belongs to the patients. They decide what to plant, when to harvest and when to eat what they want to eat.

“It gives our patients a sense of purpose. It gives them a chance to connect with us and it’s very reciprocal. We get to connect with them as well,” said Galvin.
