FOXBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's Bailey Zappe time. The Patriots are down to the third quarterback on the depth chart with Mac Jones injured and backup Brian Hoyer on injured reserve. The rookie is making his first NFL start after Mac was ruled out before the game.
Zappe is set to face off against a Detroit Lions defense on Sunday that's giving up an average of 35 points a game, dead last in the league. On the flip side, the Lions are also averaging a league-best 35 points a game on offense.
Zappe made an unexpected first appearance during the Patriots' 27-24 loss against the Packers last week, when Hoyer was knocked out with a concussion in the first quarter. He acquitted himself well, throwing 10-of-15 for 99 yards and a touchdown connection with Devante Parker.
"My parents have made a lot of sacrifices for me to get here, and for that to happen is a dream come true for all of us," he told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM at Gillette Stadium.
