SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — After months and months of pet owners pitching their furballs to be the mayor of the Somerville community bike path—there can only be one.
It all started as a proclamation that Berry the “outdoors” cat was not lost, and in fact, the mayor of the Somerville bike path. This drew sharp criticism, as the neighborhood felt that there should be an election to determine such a thing.
In the final week of voting, 70 political lawn signs sat alongside the bike lanes, all of them vying for the coveted title of mayor.
Over the summer we saw everything typical of an election: signs were defaced and new candidates from across the aisle like dogs and birds entered the fray. With the number of candidates, some locals began to question whether they even lived near the bike path.

Cats such as Berry, Hermes Squirmes, Mochi and Orange Cat were some of the feline candidates, but soon other species entered the race—there’s even a sign for a cactus.
The summer mayoral race has been seen as a fun neighborhood bonding experience.
“I think it’s phenomenal, it’s a fun neighborhood and this is a very good example of it,” one passerby said.
The vote happened online, and the polls officially close September 5.
