PEABODY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Peabody high school teacher and his sister are honoring their deceased mother with a special kind of fundraiser.

Catherine Shidler was known for her great respect for police officers and her love of animals. When she passed away on January 3 at the age of 76, her two children decided to set up a GoFundMe page befitting of their mother's legacy.

"Cathy's Vests for K9's" raises money to buy vests for area police dogs.

"When she passed away a couple weeks ago, we were trying to figure out something different to honor her memory instead of flowers," said Cathy's son Greg, a teacher at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School.

Greg and his sister Karen Costello set up the GoFundMe on January 5 with an initial goal of $500. So far they have raised over $4000.
