PEABODY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Peabody police officer fatally shot a dog after it attacked and injured its owners Thursday night, authorities said.
According to police, officers responded to a call on Endicott Street at 10:45 p.m. and found a woman and her boyfriend standing on top of a car with extensive injuries, while the dog was aggressively trying to reach them.
Police said when the responding officer showed up, the couple tried to get down from the vehicle. The dog attacked them again, latching onto the woman's head and shaking her violently. The officer used his service weapon to shoot and kill the dog, police said.
The couple were hospitalized with serious injuries. The woman was treated and released, while the man remains in the hospital, authorities said.
According to the woman's father, the incident started when the dog chased after an escaped cat. When the couple went outdoors to go after the cat, that was when the dog turned on its owners.
Police said the incident remains under investigation.
