SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Salem residents can exchange food items to waive some late fees.

The “Peas for Fees” ticket amnesty program has officially returned, giving residents the chance to waive some of their late fees on parking violations in the city. On weekdays, residents can exchange at least two canned goods or non-perishable items for up to $30 waived in late fees.

Salem Police said the program helps incentivize people to pay their tickets, while also stocking the Salem food pantries with more food for the holiday season.

“The 'Peas for Fees' program has become an annual tradition in Salem and has successfully brought in donations of food for those in need and also additional revenues for the City,” said Mayor Pangallo in a statement.

Those looking to knock down their fees can drop off their donations at the City Collector’s Office at Salem City Hall.

The program only applies to late fees for parking violations and runs until Dec. 23.
