The cosmic event happens every August when Earth passes through a thick layer of comet debris left behind by comet Swift-Tuttle.

The weather is expected to cooperate this year, with skies mainly clear of clouds and the moon setting before midnight. The forecast should make for ideal conditions to see as many as 75 meteors per hour.

Stargazers should also try to find an area away from city lights and artificial light.

When is the best time to look up? Experts say there will be some shooting stars soaring by between 9 p.m. and midnight, but the number should increase each hour, peaking after midnight.
