FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Phil Bissell, the man who created the famous ‘Pat Patriot’ logo for the New England Patriots, died at 97 years old.
His passing was announced by the New England Patriots on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday. They said, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Phil Bissell, the original creator of the Pat Patriot logo.”
Bissell was born in Worcester, Mass., and served in World War II, stated his autobiography.
Bissel created the logo while was he was working as a cartoonist for the Boston Globe in 1960. The Patriots owner at that time, Billy Sullivan, contacted Bissell about using the logo for the team after seeing his drawings in the Globe.
Bissell’s logo ‘Pat Patriot’ adorned the helmets of the New England football team and was their main logo from 1961 to 1992.
The logo has remained popular, and has recently been brought back as a retro design for the Patriots’ uniforms in 2022 and 2023.
The current logo known as the 'Flying Elvis' has been used since 1992.
