CHELSEA, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Students and teachers at the Phoenix Charter Academy are helping out some of the school's families this Thanksgiving week.

The school has filled bags with food and collected clothing for more than one hundred families and students from the school. Director of School Culture Audrey Jones said they partially relied on a GoFundMe page.

“This is our third annual food and winter clothing drive. Every year we raise money to provide our families with food and fresh produce for Thanksgiving, Christmas, February and April vacation,” said Jones.

Phoenix Charter Academy has a lot of recent immigrants coming from hotter countries, so they wanted to get them all the winter essentials they will need to stay warm.

“A lot of our students are coming from Central America, so this is their first-time experiencing snow and cold weather and severe Massachusetts winter weather,” said Jones. “Food, gloves, socks, hats, jackets, we want to make sure they have what they need to stay warm.”
