HANOVER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A soon-to-be gym on the South Shore will give pickup basketball some structure.
The first PickUp USA gym in the Commonwealth is coming to Hanover, Mass., giving basketball players a chance to play a more organized style of pickup basketball. Owner Jay Medeiros said the facility levels the playing field for those looking to get on the court.
“It’s open gym pretty much every day, all day. We run officiated pickup games six days a week, which are 10-minute games with two refs,” said Medeiros. “It takes out the hassle of arguing and not knowing who you’re going to play.”
The gym will run on a queue system, meaning everyone who shows up gets added to a team on a first come first serve basis. Medeiros said he hopes the randomness of the constantly shifting players will eliminate any hand-picked superteams. The winners get to stay on the court until they ultimately lose.
Aside from the practical benefits of having refs to keep the games moving, Medeiros said that this style of basketball is what can really take a player to the next level.
“You can practice, you can shoot around, but getting into those games and not having coaches, just letting yourself play and be natural in play, that’s how you get better at basketball,” said Medeiros.
Presales for membership go on sale next week. Medeiros said they hope to open in about a month.
