MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Middlesex Fells Reservation has dealt with the pervasive problem of leftover dog poop bags for years, but it might be a little cleaner nowadays.
That’s because of pilot program launched a few months ago by Friends of the Fells.
Two pet waste disposal stations are now placed alongside trails near Greenwood Park and Bellevue Pond.
Sam, a Medford resident, said he would see trails littered with dog poop bags a few months ago. But now that’s changed.
“I have noticed there’s a lot less of the poop bags out,” Sam said. “Those barrels are pretty full pretty regularly so I think people are actually using them.”
Friends of the Fells worked with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation to create the disposal stations as part of the “Be Kind!” campaign, which makes sure state parks can be enjoyed by everyone.
Maya, who was walking her dog, Bella, at Bellevue Pond on Monday said she also noticed a difference.
“You can hardly see any bags anymore,” Maya said.
Friends of the Fells said it planned to add more stations if the pilot proved successful, according to the city of Malden.
Maya said it seems like now is the time.
“The bin is quite full now,” she said.
