BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Pine Street Inn continued a longtime Thanksgiving tradition of serving over 2,000 holiday meals to shelter guests and tenants.
The festivities started on Thursday morning with Boston Bruins Defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who dropped off 50 Thanksgiving pies for the meal.
“It puts things in perspective to slow down [and] take a break from your job for a day to think about family and think about those who are less fortunate, and everybody gets a good meal today,” McAvoy said.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also participated in the annual event.
“We all rely on each other, we’re all part of one big community, and it’s amazing to see during the holidays everybody rolling up their sleeves and taking care of their neighbors,” Wu said.
“We have a lot of important work to do all the other days of the year, so we’re going to keep that spirit going in the days after Thanksgiving,” she added.

Lydia Downey is the President and Executive Director of the Pine Street Inn, a role she has served for 40 years.
“We’re really grateful to be here today and [to] have the guests we have. It’s a bittersweet day for people, if you’re here you don’t have anywhere else to go, and people feel that; it’s a tough day,” Downie said.
The Pine Street Inn helps end homelessness by providing individuals with housing, job training, emergency shelter, and street outreach services.
