PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Plymouth is celebrating local artists and its history with sculptures of harbor seals.
The sculptures, hand painted by local artists, are part of the Plymouth's Chamber of Commerce's 3rd public art installation, Seal'd with Art: Plymouth Harbor Seals.
The two previous installations featured scallop shells and lobsters, keeping with the sea-life theme.
Seal sculptures will be placed all over Plymouth's downtown area, turning it into an open-air art gallery, each piece with its own story.
It's "nice to collaborate on something that becomes a part of the community" and it's "very historic," some local residents said.
According to the Chamber of Commerce's website this art display is also a great way to drive tourism and support local businesses, it "brings people together."
The website also gives some insight into why they chose seals.
"As playful and iconic coastal creatures, seals represent the spirit of Plymouth’s harbor and the vibrant marine life that calls it home," the website reads.
