PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several landmarks around the town of Plymouth, including the famous Plymouth Rock, were vandalized overnight, according to Town Manager Melissa Arrighi.
Arrighi and others shared photos of the landmarks on social media Monday.
"We are saddened and sickened by the recent vandalism in our historic town," Arrighi wrote on Twitter, along with a photo of the Pilgrim Maiden statue with what appeared to be red spray-paint on it.
According to WBZ-TV, the vandals also struck the National Monument To The Forefathers, as well as a seashell-shaped sign meant to mark the upcoming 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims arriving on the Mayflower.
The landmarks were cleaned by late morning Monday, WBZ-TV reported.
The "Plymouth 400" anniversary celebrations are ongoing throughout the year, marking the Pilgrims' journey and the founding of Plymouth Colony.
