PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Illegal parkers at Plymouth's White Horse Beach are in for something of a nasty shock this summer. Parking ticket fines near the beach have been doubled to $100 for a first offense.
The town got a home rule petition passed in the state legislature to allow the changes. The town would have been allowed to raise the first offense fine as high as $150 for a first offense, but opted to go lower. Fines could reach $150 for people who are late to pay their fines.
WBZ's Jim MacKay was on the beach on Wednesday, asking people how they felt about the changes.
Linda, a resident, said her car has been ticketed there in the past. "I was frustrated and angry, I couldn't believe it!" she said. She said the fine hike "makes absolutely no sense."
Town officials are hoping the ticket increases will deter illegal parkers near the beach, which can get very busy on hot summer days.
