COHASSET, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Cohasset man is ordered held without bail after police say he attacked the local police station with a chainsaw, then barricaded himself in his house.
Police said they got a "frantic" call from the desk worker inside Cohasset Police Headquarters at about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, saying that a man had driven onto the lawn, hit a tree, and burst into the lobby of the station revving a chainsaw.
The man — later identified as Brien Buckley of Cohasset — then allegedly began to saw down the station's security door, and eventually fled the scene in his pick-up truck.
Officers followed Buckley back to his house at 37 Cushing Road in Cohasset, where police said he started yelling at them and then dangled two small children out of a second story window. Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley said both children were younger than five years old.
A SWAT team was eventually called. As negotiations got underway with Buckley, police issued a shelter-in-place order for anyone living within a quarter-mile of the area, which lasted from just after 3:40 p.m. through about 9:15 p.m.
Police say the situation deteriorated after an hours-long negotiation to free the children, and the SWAT team burst into the house and tased Buckley after rescuing the two children.
The kids were returned to their grandparents, who were on scene, and Buckley was arrested and taken to the hospital. He's charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of child endangerment, three counts of property damage, and several other charges.
Buckley is set to return to court on Jan. 6.
