BILLERICA, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Local police and the Middlesex County District Attorney said they have found the car of a woman who went missing as a teenager in the 1980's on Tuesday.

Investigators recovered a 1972 Dodge Dart driven by then 17-year-old Judith Chartier of Chelmsford in the Billerica section of the Concord River. The car was identified through a VIN number on Tuesday.

Chartier vanished after going to a party in Billerica on June 5, 1982. Her friends last saw her at about 2:00 AM that night.

District Attorney Marian Ryan called the discovery a "very significant development in this case," and said the agencies are still combing the car for more evidence.

Billerica Acting Chief Troy Opland and Chelmsford Police Chief James Spinney both thanked the departments that have been pursuing the 40-year-old case, which included a State Police dive team. Officials said a civilian sonar dive team, Sonar Search and Recovery, based in Exeter, N.H., played a key role in uncovering the car.

The D.A's office did not offer more information as to Chartier's possible fate or whereabouts.
