WALTHAM Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Police are on the lookout for old case files at an abandoned Waltham school. State Police had searched the grounds of the former Fernald Development Center for the past two days and claimed to have found nothing of evidentiary value on the property. This update comes after an initial search of the grounds in 2017 found a batch of old state police reports, files and evidence, which is presumed to have been abandoned since that discovery six years ago. New concerns were raised after a report in the Boston Globe had indicated that patient records had been recently found at the site, which prompted State Police Colonel John Mawn to order a search of the area on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, which a spokesperson for the State Police revealed that nothing related to these reports had been found. As late as 2017, State Police kept evidence for homicide investigations and at least one unsolved murder at the campus. The department said that since 2018 that they have made significant improvements to its evidence storage and chain of custody processes.
