SEEKONK, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Bristol County D.A.'s office said a robbery suspect is dead following a shootout with police in Seekonk early Sunday morning.

The D.A.'s office said the incident started after Seekonk police responded to a break-in just after 6:30 AM on Sunday on Route 6.

Police said they saw the suspect leaving on foot before getting into a black Honda parked at another business down the street.

They started to chase the suspect, and at the intersection of Route 6 and School Street, the suspect hit a curb and lost control of his car, flipping it over onto its passenger side.

Two Seekonk Police officers pulled up to the crash scene, and then the suspect allegedly opened fire on them with an AK-47. The D.A’s office said officers then returned fire and a regional SWAT team was called. The suspect was eventually confirmed to be dead.

Authorities are still trying to determine the suspect's identity. No state or local officers were hurt. The intersection of School Street and Route 6 reopened mid-Sunday afternoon..

Seekonk Police asked the public to avoid the area, and confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
