CANTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An investigation is underway after an act of vandalism at the JFK Elementary School athletic fields in Canton.

The Canton Parks and Recreation Department announced on Facebook Thursday that someone in a vehicle had done donuts across the fields overnight, leaving visible marks in the grass.

"It only took a few minutes to undo a lot of hard work and leave a mess for others to deal with," the department said.

The vandalism not only caused cosmetic damage, but left the playing surface unlevel for the rest of the year as well. This will impact the youth sports organizations that use the fields, according to Canton Parks and Recreation Director Tyler Radicioni.

"We had to backfill it with dirt and try to overseed it, but seed takes time to grow and we don’t have that time to allow it, so now the rest of the season is going to really be impacted," Radicioni told WBZ NewsRadio Friday.

Parks and recreation camp counselors and kids are currently using the fields and are not happy about their condition.

"To the absolute jerks who did this to our field, there will be justice brought upon you," said Ben, a counselor. "We will find you and you will be getting in a lot of trouble. I hope you feel good for ruining a bunch of little kids’ days."

WBZ's James Rojas reports.
