BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — New police documents say Boston City Councilor Kendra Lara was doing more than double the speed limit when she allegedly crashed a car into a house late last month.
The officer who responded to the scene of the accident on June 30 noted that Lara was driving despite the fact that her license was revoked by the state Registry of Motor Vehicles. A deeper dive in the report lists off several dings on Lara's record, including not wearing a seatbelt and driving without registration. Her license had allegedly been suspended since 2013 and revoked two years alter.
An analysis by the responding officer after the crash found that Lara had hit a minimum speed of 53 miles per hour on Central Street, which is a 25 mile per hour zone. The police report notes that Lara could have been driving up to 59 miles per hour. The report also suggests that Lara was not wearing a seatbelt, as her belt had not locked the way it was supposed to if it was buckled.
Lara's team admitted she was involved in the crash shortly after it happened, and that her son 7-year-old Zaire was injured. The police report said the child was supposed to have been in a booster seat, and had a cut on his eyebrow that was bleeding badly at the time of the crash.
The responding officer said he had filed an Immediate Threat report with the RMV, which says a certain driver should be kept off the road because they are "an immediate threat to the public safety."
Lara has been summonsed to West Roxbury Boston Municipal Court on charges of Reckless Operation, Speeding and a seat belt violation. The city councilor apologized in a public statement about a week after the crash.
Court officials told WBZ NewsRadio she's due to appear on July 19 at 9:00 a.m. for an extraordinarily rare public hearing before a court clerk magistrate, who will decide whether there is cause to file a criminal complaint against Lara. Those hearings are almost always kept sealed.
