Port Worker Strike Suspended As Both Sides To Return To Negotiating Table

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The U.S. port worker strike is suspended.

The International Longshoremen’s Association, released a joint statement with the U.S. Maritime Alliance on Oct. 3 to pause strike until Jan. 15 to give both sides time to reach an agreement.

Nearly 45 thousand dockworkers at East and Gulf coast ports walked off the job on Tuesday after its previous contract expired and no new deal was reached. Workers are fighting for better wages and benefits, and protection against automation.

The strike did put a risk on businesses and retailers with the holiday shopping season approaching. Containers were not being processed during the port stoppage, including the Conley Terminal in South Boston.
