SHARON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – Its not a new craft, but pottery as a hobby is seeing something of a resurgence in a time where people are looking for a screen-free activity.

“Years ago when I would tell people I make pottery they would just smile and nod,” said Lizanne Donegan. “Now they say ‘oh what kind of pottery?’”

Donegan has been throwing the wheel for 30 years. Right now in her classes at Potters Place in Sharon there are people on waitlists pages long to get in.

“Occasionally we will have an opening, but classes are full right now,” she said.

The ancient craft as always been something she has enjoyed. She loves the smell of the clay, and the way it feels when she molds it in her hands. For those she's seeing in her beginners classes looking for a new hobby, its about stepping away from technology.

“People really want to get involved with something to do with their hands,” Dunegan said as she sat at the wheel. “All craft has really exploded in the last few years.”

Potters Place has classes five days a week this winter. They have the basics for beginners and kids, all the way up to potters who have been working with clay for a lifetime.

Donegan says its not just fun, and practical but truly an accomplishment every time a project is done.

“It’s very fulfilling, very satisfying."
