BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was a slower start than usual to the workday today in Brockton after a planned downtown power outage to repair a damaged cable.

National Grid said the outage was scheduled repair work that started last night so that workers could safely repair a cable under Frederick Douglas Avenue that was damaged by a contractor last week.

Some residents and business owners said they were surprised by the outage. "We've been using emergency power," said one business owner.

Another added that he had "no clue" as to why their power was out.

Officials said the cable that had to be fixed provides power to homes and businesses throughout parts of downtown.

They said all of the repair work was scheduled to be completed by 7 a.m. but power was restored earlier than anticipated.
