KINGSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The smell is unmistakable.

Most if not all dog owners have experienced their pet on the receiving end of an angry skunk.

It is a stench like no other designed by nature to repel, hurt, and stick around.

When it happens, it's unexpected, with both animal and owner traumatized.

Many people in this situation will go to the web for answers on what to do.

And that information can be wrong.

WBZ NewsRadio's Jim MacKay went straight to the professionals for advice on actions to take if a dog gets sprayed by a skunk.

At 'Dapper Dog Grooming Pawlor' in Kingston, owner Seanna Macaulay had this advice. "The first thing most people want to do is bathe the dog," she said.

But that's exactly what NOT to do. "That will just make your problem worse," she said.

As far as effective homemade treatments, Seanna said one that works well is the use of mixing Baking Soda, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Dawn Dish Soap.

She said "blot, don't rub."

And there are all kinds of products sold at stores with varying degrees of effectiveness.

At the end of the day, experts agree the best way to protect your dog from ever getting sprayed by a skunk is to do everything possible to keep them apart.
