SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new venue looking to take over the old Salem Lowe spot at the Salem Willows has sparked a debate among some residents.
A type of bar has been in the works for months after the popular Chinese restaurant closed last September.
Word spread about applications for liquor licenses at the address, and a petition was quickly created to oppose granting liquor licenses at the property, which has garnered over 600 signatures.
The petition argues that the park should stay alcohol-free, and any proposed bar is inconsistent with the park’s family friendly activities, along with potential for “public harm,” and creating loud noise late into the night.
“Any proposed bar will impermissibly interfere with residents' right to quiet enjoyment in their homes. Permitted public events at the park are sporadic, vetted, controlled, subject to an open process, and end by eight or nine at night,” the residents write.
A new business called Axe & Bows now wants to take over the property, which would feature axe throwing, games, food and drinks.
A petition in support of the business and its application for a seasonal liquor license was started last week, with over 400 signatures.
It claims the space will cater to kids and adults. Those in support argue the business would not be a rowdy bar, would not feature loud music, and would bring jobs to Salem.
“Any thriving business at the Willows will naturally attract visitors. Denying a liquor license based on a fear of potential popularity is counterproductive to the area’s success,” according to the petition.
The petition also claims that the owners “have a proven track record of responsible business practices and community engagement.”
