PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A lone gunman is dead after an early-morning shootout with Police on Thursday. Police got a call at about 2:30 AM Thursday morning from a home on Denison Street, saying Scott McLean was attacking his son and daughter, according to WPRI.

Police identified McLean as a gunman at about 5:00 AM, and said they were negotiating with him — telling people in the area not to leave their homes. By 6:30, police began reporting multiple shots fired.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré told reporters on scene that the man had at least 15 guns inside the Denison Street home. He said the man shot at the police several times, and was eventually found dead inside the home.

At 6:45, Providence Fire also reported a fire at the house, which they extinguished.

Officials said the man had no criminal history, but suffered from mental health problems.

The Rhode Island Attorney General will investigate exactly how the man died.
