QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A clothing brand based out of Quincy has made it to the grandest stage in international competition.

"It’s something that would never happen, a Cape Verdean brand to actually dress the Cape Verdean Olympic team," ISLNDZ CEO Alex Figueiredo told WBZ NewsRadio Thursday.

But it happened.

The Cape Verdean National Olympic Committee selected ISLNDZ to supply the clothing for the Cape Verde team at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, with athletes rocking the brand on t-shirts, workout clothes, and relaxing gear.

Figueiredo, a Quincy High School graduate and Wentworth Institute of Technology alum who spent much of his youth in Cape Verde, launched the brand with three family members out of a Quincy apartment in 2018.

"Along with my brother and my cousins, we decided to just start a creative venture in making t-shirts," Figueiredo said.

This is not the first time ISLNDZ has played a part in Cape Verdean athletics; the brand designed the Cape Verdean national soccer team's logo, a move which helped secure the Olympic deal.

"It’s been a team effort from the beginning to pull this through," Figueiredo said. "And now that it has the Olympic rings, it just brings another level of notoriety. And I tell [the co-founders], 'When we started designing t-shirts, did you ever think it would get to this point?'"

Figueiredo and co-founder and cousin Filipe Soares just returned from Paris, where they got to meet the Cape Verdean team.

Figueiredo beamed with pride as he recalled the athletes "really shaking your hand and thanking you for the work that you did."
