QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Housing advocates say there is a growing need for more affordable senior housing in Massachusetts.

On the South Shore, Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch has proposed turning the soon-to-close Eastern Nazarene College into housing for aged 55-plus residents.

The proposal will be discussed at a planning board meeting next month.

Quincy resident Adele lives down the street from the college and said her parents would be thrilled to hear the news. "I think that's a good thing," she said. "There's a lot of seniors, if they don't have a home at this stage in their lives, it's difficult to afford."

Another resident said he has concerns he'd like addressed before the project is approved. "Other than the housing itself, there's the traffic and the cars that are involved."

A key part of the mayor's plan that needs approval is to restrict any future development of the college property to include only senior housing.

Eastern Nazare College is scheduled to close at the end of this year.
