QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Quincy has received more than $4 million in a grant from the Federal Transit Administration to upgrade the decades old Squantum Point Park Ferry Pier.
The upgrades were also made possible through a partnership with the MBTA.
The pier is over 30 years old, and will be upgraded with a new pier, float, and ramp system.
MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng and Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch expressed their enthusiasm and approval for the project.
"We're looking forward to continuing to provide safe, reliable water transportation as an option as we work to increase transportation access for the communities we serve well into the future," said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng.
"This pier will allow for a robust Ferry Service to serve the people of Quincy and greater Boston," said Koch.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke to some people who ride the ferry to work every day, and they are thrilled about the new upgrades.
“[I’m] very excited it’s wonderful. Anything to improve it [and] keep it going is great,” said Kerry, a Marina Bay resident.
Some ferry commuters also see the upgrades as a wise investment into the future.
“We’re ecstatic, I mean we’ve been waiting for this. I only started recently taking the ferry and it’s an amazing way to commute to work,” said Stella Karavas, a Marina Bay resident.
“I’m overjoyed that [the upgrades] are going to make it easier for people, and that we’ll have more funds going into the community,” added another resident.
The MBTA said that the initiative will specifically benefit elderly riders and those with disabilities by enhancing the accessibility of the system and the overall ridership experience.
