QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An armed robbery, who stole a Rockland Police cruiser Friday morning, was shot and killed by police Friday morning following a standoff in Quincy.
Police say the incident began around 7 a.m. -- when 36-year-old Eric M. Leach of Brockton and Winthrop allegedly committed an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven in Rockland. Leach then somehow made off in a police cruiser and drove up Route 3, crashing into other police cars during a chase.
The chase ended in a standoff on Burgin Parkway in Quincy, where Leach got out of the passenger side door of the cruiser armed with a patrol rifle, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey.
After negotiations between police and Leach were unsuccessful, Morrissey said the Massachusetts State Police stop team member discharged his weapon and shot the suspect.
"The suspect was transported immediately to the Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m.," Morrissey said. "[Police] tried to clear people out of the area -- they're faced with an armed suspect, they have decisions to make, and those decisions will be reviewed over the next few days."
The shooting remains under investigation by the Norfolk District Attorney's Office.
