PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Natural gas customers in Massachusetts might be seeing a hefty hike on their bills this winter.

Eversource has proposed a 13% rate increase for its customers. While it still needs approval from the Department of Public Utilities, some residents aren't happy with the possible increase.

"Well, everything right now is very, very expensive, so it would really be a burden for us," one customer stated.

If passed, customers will see the increased costs impact their bills starting Nov. 1.

"I think that's outrageous. It never ceases to amaze me," another resident said.

Eversource cites several factors for the hike, like infrastructure investment, public benefits, and supply maintenance. Customers will notice their bill broken down into the three categories in the near future. The potential rate hikes have given some customers pause.

"Definitely scary, really scary, something people should be budgeting for," a customer remarked.

As costs continue to balloon across industries, Eversource is offering payment support programs to assist with the rate hike as customers feel the squeeze on their wallets.

"Everybody's feeling it. We've got inflation nationwide," another resident said.
