BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Red Sox acquired San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer in a trade deal Tuesday.

The deal sees Hosmer and two minor league players from San Diego—infielder Max Ferguson and outfielder Corey Rosier—come to Boston in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Jay Groome.

Hosmer agreed to a $144 million, eight-year deal with San Diego before the 2018 season. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Padres will pay the rest of the money owed to Hosmer—approximately $44 million through the end of the 2025 season—to the Red Sox as part of the deal.

In 2022, Hosmer has hit .272 with 16 doubles, eight home runs, 40 RBI, and a .727 OPS in 90 games.
